Week Five Group Guide

Family. That can mean so many things to so many people. But one thing we all have in common regarding family is…we all have one. Some of us consider it a treasure. Others think it’s a curse. But there’s another thing we probably have in common: We all want something as good – if not betterfor our children. But what does “better” look like? What exactly are we aiming for?During the “Family Matters” message series, the goal is to examine what the Bible has to say about “family” and to get a grip on why that matters.

  • Will we “redefine” family or will we choose to let God “refine” us through our family?
  • Is there a “secret sauce” for improving our family relationships?
  • Can we learn to fight fair?
  • Do we have any control over our family legacy?

This message series is designed to get us to think deeply about just a few basic principles that God says will improve the health and the value of our family. The Life Group Discussion Guide that follows will help you put these principles into action.

Let me take a moment to give you a quick tour and explanation of what you’ll find here. And most importantly, how to make the most of the components. First of all, what I’m challenging you to do as a group is simply:
G = Gather
R = Review the events in each other’s lives
O = Open God’s Word, using the podcast of the message
U = Understand and apply just one (1) truth by putting it into action
P = Pray for each other…for God’s wisdom, strength and courage
When you get to the “O” … listen to the podcast by clicking on the “Podcast” button at the bottom of the page. And you can even access a copy of the outline of the message. Then use the 3 or 4 discussion questions in the sidebar to help everyone in the group to put the “U” into practice! Those are the core ideas and steps of having a healthy and successful Rock Springs Life Group meeting! If you would like to get a running start before the meeting, click on “Introduction” and “Moving Forward”. That’s where you’ll find some ideas to get your mind and your group thinking about the lesson, and to help you carry it through your week. And “Changing Your Mind” is where you’ll find the memory verse for the week. Again, I’m really proud of you for doing this! If you get a moment, let us know that you’re giving it go, tell us about the exciting things that God may be doing in your group, and don’t hesitate to ask for guidance on group questions.  Just email us at

Pastor David

When it comes to family, actions speak louder than words—they echo into the next generation. Your children and grandchildren may forget what you say, but they’ll never forget what you do.
1. Growing up, what stories did you hear about your grandparents or great-grandparents? How did those stories help shape who you are?
2. How do you usually respond under pressure? Why?
3. What would you do differently if you knew that your children will eventually take their cues from what you do rather than what you say?
4. What is one thing you can do this week to begin to change how your life will echo in the lives of your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren? What can this group do to support you?
Parents, our clearest messages are sent during times of crisis. Our lives are defined for our children by the decisions we make under pressure. We’re shaping our children’s memories, deciding what they’ll look back on. We can’t control their responses, but we can control the examples we set.
In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness.
