Well-Balanced Health

(Spirit, Mind & Body)

In order to experience a balanced and healthy life, you really must include all three aspects of yourself: your spirit, your mind and your body. All are equally important and all are vital to living a life that is productive and pleasing to God. He wants us to take care of all of these areas of our life. After all, He created us with all three things. Here are some simple things you can do right now that will move the spirit, mind and body in the right direction.

it almost goes without saying. But it’s so important to read Scripture every day. Doesn’t have to be an hour’s worth. I can promise you this: there are a few passages that are terribly short, but terribly convicting if you take it seriously and put it into practice. For instance, take James 1:22…”Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear!” Right out of the gates, James is schooling us. You could work on that one verse for a while before moving on to another one.

And don’t neglect gathering for worship on Sundays and meeting with your spiritual partners in life at least once a week. So very important for the building up of your spirit.

Our minds are such powerful things! Without any effort at all, our mind can talk us into or out of any number of things…good and bad. But the one thing we can put into practice starting this very minute is the idea of perseverance. YOU CAN PERSEVERE! I don’t know your life story and I don’t know what you’ve been through in your life, but whatever it is, YOU’RE STILL HERE! Whatever you went through didn’t kill you. And that means you can make it through anything else. You are capable of starting, continuing and reaching the goals and finish-lines that you envision. So don’t quit when it gets hard…and don’t quit when you think the finish line is too far away. YOU ARE STRONG! YOU CAN DO IT!
Oh, golly. Can’t we just skip this one? No. We can’t. But here’s something you can start doing today…right now. Don’t think about doing an hour of cardio or 45 minutes of weight training. Think about moving actively for just 5 minutes a day! That’s all. If the thought of more than that seems overwhelming, this should be just the ticket. Anyone can do anything for 5 minutes. Walk around your block once or twice. March in place while you’re watching a tv show. Go to the park with your kids/dogs (weather permitting). Not only will this definitely have benefits in the long run, but it will give you the incentive to do even more when the time comes.

Five minutes is a baby step. It’s a tiny commitment. And when you follow through and complete a tiny commitment, it does wonders for your spirit and your mind. (See how they’re all intertwined and connected?) You start to believe in yourself. You start to see yourself making the changes that matter and that lead to all the goals you have for yourself.

Here’s another baby step in the area of the body/nutrition. You don’t have to change every single aspect of your eating lifestyle. According to Chris & Heidi Powell, here are the Foundation Five that you can start doing immediately:

1) Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces every day.
2) Eat breakfast as soon as your feeding window opens (kinda makes me feel like a zoo animal.)
3) Eat a source of protein at every meal.
4) Reduce your daily sugar intake to < 50g. and your daily sodium intake to < 3000mg.
5) Deliberately move for at least 5 minutes every day (already talked about that one.)

These are NOT hard steps. They’re relatively easy to do and easy to incorporate into an already-busy lifestyle. And if you can’t start doing all 5 at once, then add one of these things this week, then add another one to it next week, and so on.

Bottom line: if you skip a step, or slip and fall (figuratively or literally), just get back up and keep going. That’s the perseverance part. You haven’t failed. You only fail when you choose to give up. So keep getting up.

Here’s to a healthy and happy 2018. And know that we at the Wellspring Ministry of Rock Springs are here to support you and to equip you and to cheer you on to that finish line…here on earth and beyond.
